New Pro-Life Discourse

October 9, 2006 · Leave a Comment

UPI is reporting on the discourse of the pro-life movement in South Dakota.

Abortion rights opponents in South Dakota are using feminist-sounding slogans to urge voters to preserve the toughest abortion ban in the country.

Rather than quote the bible or talk about the sanctity of life, the South Dakotans have come up with a pink and blue message that “Abortion Hurts Women,” The Los Angeles Times reports.

Voters in South Dakota will be asked next month whether to repeal a measure passed by the legislature in February making it a felony to help any woman terminate a pregnancy except in cases where the mother’s life is in jeopardy.

Leslee Unruh, who heads up the effort to preserve the abortion ban, argues that legalizing abortion exploits women.

“We women buy the choice line,” says Unruh. “We’re panicked, or we’re being pressured, or we’re ashamed to have a child outside marriage.”

Rhode Island Lesbians Win Right to Marry in Massachusetts

October 9, 2006 · Leave a Comment

AP is reporting on a recent court decision.

A lesbian couple from Rhode Island who won the right to marry in Massachusetts held their ceremony Sunday.

After being denied a marriage license in Massachusetts, Wendy Becker and Mary Norton challenged a 1913 state law that prohibits out-of-state residents from marrying if the union would not be permitted in their home state.

They argued that same-sex marriage was not specifically banned in Rhode Island. Superior Court Judge Thomas Connolly agreed last month, saying he saw no evidence of a “constitutional amendment, statute, or controlling appellate decision” making same-sex marriage illegal in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri, a Republican and a gay marriage opponent, said through a spokesman that he has no plans to try to revise the state’s laws.

Lessons from the Amish

October 9, 2006 · 1 Comment

Ben Witherington has an excellent post on his blog about the recent events involving the Amish.

This I know for sure. This world is run by a God who answers prayer, not by a God who calls us to other sorts of arms. This world is run by a God who died for me on the cross and shouted out with his dying breath about those who were tormenting and killing him “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” If we could only see with Jesus’ eyes, we would know that suffering love and forgiveness is what saves and heals the world. The Amish know that. And they have borne witness to us all this week. May the memory of Marian Fisher be seared into our hearts for a long time to come. It is a portrait of our Lord.
