Senator Casey to Oppose Stem Cell Bill

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The New York Times political blog is reporting that Sen. Casey will oppose the stem cell bill.

Senator Bob Casey, left, a freshman Democrat from Pennsylvania who campaigned as a social conservative, has said he will vote against the bill. Democrats hope for support from Senator John E. Sununu, Republican of New Hampshire, who may face a tough race next year in a state where Democrats have gained strength.

Sen. Casey’s opposition to the stem cell bill is a really positive sign for the pro-life movement. Sen. Casey defeated Sen. Rick Santorum in the last election, and Sen. Santorum was one of the most important pro-life advocates in the Senate. There was some concern about whether Sen. Casey would actually follow through on his pro-life position once he got to the Senate. The fact that he is opposing stem cell research, which is a very popular issue politically, is a very positive sign for pro-lifers. The fact that he was willing to take a stance on this issue makes it more likely that he will also support conservative judicial judicial nominees.
